Commerce is the whole system of an economy that constitutes an environment for business. The system includes legal, economic, political, social, cultural and technological systems that are in operation in any country or internationally. Thus, commerce is a system or an environment that affects the business prospects of economies. It can also be defined as a component of business which includes all activities, functions and institutions involved in transferring goods from producers to consumers.
The Department was started in 1952 with inter mediate programme. Under graduate programme (B.Com) was started in the year 1954 and M.Com. was introduced in the year 1980. The department was approved by Bharathidasan University as research Department to conduct M.Phil and Ph.D. Programme in the year 2001. The Department has a strength of 13 staff members and 11 of them are Ph.D degree holders.
There are 340 students in the UG, 50 in PG, 10 students in M.Phil and 14 scholars in the Ph.D programme in the Department. The pass percentage of students in the final examinations is 70% for UG and 95% for PG
The Department has produced 50 M.Phil and 25 Ph.D degree holders in the last five years.
Many staff members are serving as members of Board of Studies in Bharathidasan University, Periyar University and Autonomous Colleges.
The teachers of the department periodically participate in the faculty development programme.
The department conducts special coaching classes for candidates appearing for ACS preliminary and inter level examinations. The college has signed a MOU with Company Secretaries of India for the same.

There are about 3000 books available in the college library in the Commerce Section. Besides, the department keeps a library under Book bank scheme for the benefit of students. The following journals are subscribed in the subject.
