The rich legacy of sports at National College, Tiruchirappalli, paved the way for the establishment of the esteemed Research Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. Initially, physical training was not mandatory, and the college lacked a Physical Director, relying instead on Games Superintendents like Sri S. Thothadri Iyengar from the Economics Department.
Sri M. S. Sundaram from the English Department and Sri R. Pichan from Philosophy later held this role, with notable achievements such as the Hockey team’s victory in the Pentland Shield under Sundaram’s captaincy. The college's first Physical Director, Sri A. V. Desikachari, served from 1930 to 1954, bringing significant accolades, including Volleyball championships in 1950-51 and 1951-52. With the campus relocation, the college acquired a spacious playground in 1959, accommodating up to 700 players. This period also saw the inauguration of various sports facilities and the hosting of prestigious inter-collegiate events. Noteworthy athletes like Messrs M. S. Venkatesan and M. S. Balasubramanian represented the college in cricket, while Mr. Mohamed Ali excelled in tennis, securing university championships and further elevating the college’s sporting prestige.
These special children need extra support with tasks like reading, writing, expressing themselves, understanding what others communicate, and so on. These students are given opportunity to participate in football, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, swimming, etc., that happens across the state. Apart from sports these students are also encouraged to participate in events of their areas of interest like photography, drawing, music, etc. The Department envision a future where they can actively participate in and contribute to society, breaking down barriers and showcasing their unique talents and perspectives.
