Preamble
- This document was developed to provide students, staff and other stakeholders with the policy position of NCT with regard to research in the institution.
- Every care was taken to cover all facets within the scope of the research policy and eliminate errors.
- Any comments, queries and suggestions may be brought to the attention of the Chairperson, Institutional Research Committee (IRC).
- The NCT reserves the right to alter, amend or modify sections of this policy document in response to institutional, university's or national needs as and when there arises a need, and is committed to doing so on a regular basis.
Introduction
- Academic institutions are expected to perform threefold activity which includes teaching, research and extension.
- Research is one of the pioneer aspects of academic activities which help the institution and the incumbents to achieve excellence. This is in realization of the fact that research provides the foundation for future development of the Institution.
- It also includes the quality of learning and knowledge development. Research and developmental activities help to create and disseminate new avenues in knowledge, and promote innovation which in turn will motivate better learning and teaching among the faculties.
- Research is the foundation of knowledge that brings new energy, builds state-of-the-art facilities, promotes research publications, develops collaborations and becomes part of an active community that shares the mission objectives.
- Taking these into consideration, the NCT has framed this Research Policy and looks forward to its implementation.
- The National College, an autonomous institution of higher learning, under Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, with local, regional, national and global impacts, routinely evaluates its standards, programmes, practices and special ventures to remain effective.
- Institutional Research (IR) is, therefore, an essential component of the routine activities as an aspect of quality assurance (QA) mechanism of the institution. In other words, the institution endeavors quality enhancement through evidence-based strategic planning and execution in the context of research.
- The research activities, their outcomes, evaluation, dissemination and reporting, all in appropriate levels of qualities, should be available to the stakeholders, thus providing for transparency and accountability.
- The research policy has been developed on the ground that data on the institution’s research may, in addition to fulfilling the academic purpose it is intended, also be required by external entities, say the University and the Government(s), for the purpose of sector and national reporting, accreditation, partnerships, and funding, among others, as basic long term research provides the foundation for future development of the Institution.
Purpose
- The purpose of the Research Policy is to create a vibrant atmosphere of research among the faculty and inculcate research aptitude among the scholars and students.
- The policy shall serve as an overall framework within which research activities will be carried out.
- It also aims to identify thrust areas of research having social relevance and thereby supplement the vision and mission goals of the college.
- The Research Policy also emphasizes contribution to discovery and dissemination of knowledge.
- The custodian of the research policy is the Institutional Research Committee (IRC).
Scope
- This Research Policy forms the basics of the rigor and ethics of research of the college and is due to be implemented in all the departments. It serves as the guideline for the functioning of the IRC of the college.
Objectives of Research Policy
- To provide a proper coordination of all research activities of the college and aligning these to the vision and missions of the college and national development goals.
- To identify and inform researchers about the appropriate research opportunities announced by different academic, research, industry or government organizations.
- To identify and establish linkages including MOUs for long term relationships with national and international research organizations for widening the scope of research opportunities and funding options available to the teachers and students of the college.
- To develop awareness regarding research among the faculty of NCT.
- To establish the right kind of research culture through various research initiatives and programs.
- To motivate and encourage faculty members to engage in research and publish research papers/reviews/chapters/books/articles in outlets/journals/periodicals of reputation in such a way that the publication merits research metrics.
- To do it with the support of full-time/part-time research scholars and/or project students, and in case such working hands are not available, to do it without such support.
- To ensure that the topics of research are socially important / relevant such that the knowledge that is discovered percolates not only among the fellow research communities but also among intellectually enlightened common man.
- To create awareness in the society through various research initiatives and by giving due publicity to the socially useful research projects that will be undertaken by the college.
- To find the possibility of connecting the research outcome(s) to extension activities such that the research becomes relevant/useful to the community.
- To create an awareness about patents and Intellectual Property Rights and motivate them to apply for patents.
- Thus, to inculcate a research culture among the faculty and students.
The Research Policy
- The college shall have a well-defined research quality which shall act as a guideline for the postgraduate students, research scholars, teachers and all other concerned personnel.
- Original basic and/or applied research of high quality in the fields of science, humanities, literature, commerce, sports and all related and other relevant fields, will be encouraged.
- Emerging areas of research to be identified by the respective departmental committees and the faculty members will be encouraged to undertake research in these areas.
- The researchers will be encouraged to establish linkage with industries and business organizations and identify potential areas of research, surveys and other basic research activities so as to reap the benefits of association with business houses, industries, NGOs, Government and Research Organizations.
- The faculty members engaged in research shall be encouraged to avail research grants from National Funding agencies such as SERB, DBT, DST, ICMR, CSIR, UGC, ICSSR, ICHR, etc., and from the private philanthropic Agencies.
- Appropriate facilities will be provided to the faculty members and scholars to publish their research findings and encourage them to bring the issues of contemporary importance to the notice of the society.
- In the publication / reporting of the research outcomes, it is mandatory for the researchers to strictly adhere to the ethical principles of research, including choice of the outlet and quality of writing. It is emphasized that plagiarism in any form should be strictly avoided. Care should be taken to avoid publication in sub-standard/predatory journals.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops, etc., to develop appropriate research skills and aptitude among the scholars and faculty members, will be facilitated.
- Faculty members/research personnel will be encouraged to attend conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops, etc., in their respective fields and/or interdisciplinary areas as well as in areas of contemporary importance.
- The Departments/Faculty members will be encouraged to establish suitable infrastructure and centres of excellence in the college that will help to undertake different research studies and avail research grants.
- The faculty members and researchers will be facilitated to enrich information and data resources appropriate for engaging in quality research.
- Seed money will be earmarked annually for undertaking minor research projects in emergent fields by the College Management.
- The congenial atmosphere, as may be required, to undertake these and such other activities which will inculcate research culture in the college will be provided.

Issue of Hall Tickets
Students who enroll for a Degree or Diploma programme shall appear for all the end semester examinations in the First Semester without having to apply for it. The fee for the examination is collected along with the Semester fee for every semester. However, from second semester onwards, students need to apply for the end semester examinations through ‘On-line’ registration system. The online exam application link is available on College website (www.nct.ac.in).
In case of students having arrear examinations, they need to specify the arrear courses at the time of online-submission of exam applications. The fee for arrear courses alone need to be paid through college office/bank separately. Upon successful completion of the online exam application procedure within the stipulated time period as communicated by the Controller’s office, the student may take out his own ‘Hall-Ticket’ in the printed format.
The student may not be able to apply for the online examination using his registration details if he / she has semester payment dues. If he / she falls short of the required percentage of attendance, He / She may not be able to download the Hall-Ticket.
Note: The online exam application weblink and hall ticket printing out facility may be kept open for students’ access only for a limited period of time as will be announced during the end of each semester. Beyond this time period, no student may have access to do so. Students who fail to apply through online mode for semester examinations may not be permitted to appear for the exams under any circumstances. Students who fail to print their own hall-ticket within this ‘access-period’ may not be permitted to appear for the exams under any circumstances.
Attendance: Students must have 75% of attendance in each semester for appearing the examination. Students who have 60% to 74% of attendance shall apply for condonation only for genuine medical reasons. Such candidates may apply for condonation with prescribed fee and a valid medical certificate. Students who have below 60% of attendance are not eligible to appear for the examination. They shall re-do the semester(s) after completion of the programme.
Evaluation of Internal Assessment
The Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA), is based on the performance of the student in the Assignment, Tests, Seminars and Attendance, every semester. This score is coupled with the Semester Examinations, to decide the percentage of marks secured by the student. This can be converted into the grade points. The Course Teacher evaluates the performance. This evaluation is consolidated at the end of the course. The components for the CIA are:
