THE DEPARTMENT

ABOUT HINDI

The Department of Hindi was established in 1942, with Sri T.S. Ramakrishnan M.A. as its first faculty member.

From 1938 onwards, students began learning Hindi with the assistance of Shri Avadhanandam, Secretary of Hindi Prachar Sabha, Trichy.

Initially, students were taught the Hindi alphabet and language fundamentals for the Intermediate class, while B.A. students learned Hindi as an optional language.

In 1957, Hindi became a compulsory second language for B.Sc students, with many students from various departments opting for it as their Part II Language.

In 1954, the B. Com program was introduced, and Shri D. Rajagopal M.A., B.O.L., was appointed as the department's second lecturer.

By 1967, students were given the option to choose their preferred language of study, leading to increased flexibility in language learning.

After 27 years of service, Shri T.S. Ramakrishnan retired in 1969, and Shri M.R. Chidambaram M.A. was appointed as Tutor in Hindi.

The department continued to grow, and by 1970, it had imparted Hindi language skills to thousands of students who chose it as their Part I language.

Hindi, being the Rashtra Basha, attracted students eager to learn another Indian language, helping them secure jobs in Northern India and motivating them to join the armed forces.

Until 2017, Shri S. Chandramohan was the professor who guided and empowered students in learning Hindi, contributing to their success as teachers and translators.
