THE DEPARTMENT
About history
History has been an integral part of our college since its inception in 1919, marking its debut as an intermediate-level subject. From the outset, our curriculum has placed significant emphasis on both Ancient History and Modern History, reflecting a commitment to deepening our understanding of the past. Sri. K. Ramanujachariar, our esteemed first Principal, set the tone as a distinguished historian whose leadership shaped the early years of our academic journey. Under Principal Sri Saranathan's guidance by 1924, the College achieved a milestone by securing affiliation for its History and Economics Departments at the degree level. Initially known simply as the History and Economics Department, its stature grew with the addition of the esteemed historian Prof. K.A. Neelakandasasthri to its faculty in 1929.
The evolution of History within our institution continued to flourish. In 1956, History emerged as a Pre-University Course, drawing an increasing number of students eager to delve into the complexities of the past. This popularity paved the way for the establishment of a separate B.A. History course in 1981-1982, thanks to the visionary efforts of Prof. K. Ayyamperumal, who became the department's inaugural Head.
While History remains the cornerstone of our B.A. program, we also place significant emphasis on allied disciplines such as Journalism, Tourism and Management, Public Administration, Archaeology, Modern Governments, Human Rights, General Knowledge, and Current Affairs.
To support our students' academic journey, the department operates a book bank scheme, providing essential textbooks and study materials, particularly tailored for those who may need extra assistance. Each year, the G. Venkata Subramanian Endowment Lecture gathers esteemed historians like Padma Shri Iravathan Mahadevan, Dr. R. Kalaikovan, Dr. K. Rajan, and Kudavoil Balasubramanian to enrich our academic discourse. Looking forward, we are actively pursuing plans to elevate our department to a post-graduate level, aiming to expand our scholarly contributions.
Our commitment to intellectual engagement extends beyond the classroom. The inaugural Prof. M.S. Venkataramaiyar Endowment Lecture held on March 21, 2016, featured Shri. T.V. Rengarajan from Bharatheeya Ithihasa Sangalana Samithi, South India, discussing "ANCIENT INDIA’S Contribution to the World of Science and Technology," highlighting our dedication to exploring history's impact on global advancements. Additionally, our annual History Association meetings serve as vibrant platforms for scholars nationwide to interact closely with our students, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights.
Furthermore, the department spearheads various initiatives such as the Heritage Club Exhibition, State Level Quiz Competition, and Youth Awareness Programs, reinforcing our commitment to community engagement and historical awareness. Most recently, on February 26, 2020, the Prof. K.A Nilakantha Sastri Endowment Lecture featured Dr. V. Gopalakrishnan, Former Executive Director of BHEL, Trichy, delivering a keynote address titled "Saints and Kings from the Kaveri Belt in Tamil Nadu," underscoring our ongoing efforts to explore and celebrate regional histories.
In short, our college's journey with History is not just a study of the past but a testament to our enduring commitment to scholarly excellence, community engagement, and the exploration of historical narratives that enrich our understanding of the world around us. As we look ahead, we remain steadfast in our mission to cultivate a deeper appreciation for history while preparing.

STUDYING HISTORY
Purpose of Studying History
The study of history provides a foundation of insightful knowledge, grounded in the humanities and in the social sciences, that is useful to people's personal and professional lives.
Scientists tell us that those who lose their memories have difficulty imagining the future. Time is a fundamental condition of human experience: we are, to a great degree, that which we remember. Time means change, and our environment and our societies have been formed through long-term cultural, political, social and economic processes. Those who would interpret the evolution of modern society must know something about its history.
Students of History gain knowledge and insights into the important processes that have linked regions and countries through social contacts, trade, ideological exchange, migration and war. Today, when world societies are becoming increasingly transcultural, and globalisation and international environmental change are affecting our daily lives, it is all the more important for us to gain knowledge of our shared historical background.
