ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

About the Department

The Department of English, which works in line with Bharathidasan University policies, contributes to socialize students into Literacy, Liberalism and Global Citizenship transmitting particular worldviews and instilling in them knowledge, and obedience to cultural believes and practices through educational practices. Further, the Department strives to participate in and contribute to research and practice in the disciplines of Literary and Critical Studies. The department operates the core courses in English Literature which introduces students to study of Literature by providing practice in careful, critical reading and developing in them a sense of various context- biographical, social, political- that can enrich their understanding of any genre of work. When the department started in 1919, affiliated to Madras University, it enabled the students to learn and comprehend the written and spoken form of English Language. Later, the department started B.A English in 1963 and M.A English in 1977. In all these years, the two methods of teaching -Just-in- Time as teachers centered, and Interactive-Lecture as students centered have been followed. In the year 2000, M.Phil and Ph.D Research Programmes, affliliated to Bharathidasan University, were introduced. For this purpose, it has employed well qualified and experienced faculty members, who have been in touch with the latest research in their field.

Vision

The Department of English creates a learning environment with an aim to develop students’ communicative abilities and research interest. It intends to serve as a bridge, connecting national and international concerns, eventually fostering openness in the sphere of Literature and Language in order to appreciate cultures, communities and people.

Dr. Benet, Associate Professor regularly conducts Coaching Classes on all weekends for the students of English to qualify NET / SET in English discipline. The Classes are being attended by many around the state of Tamil Nadu and most popular among them.

  • A Three Day UGC Sponsored Symposium on New Vistas of Research in English Studies at National College, Tiruchirappalli, 6th through 8th of March 2014. Amount spent – Rs. 211,000. Dr.D.E.Benet was the coordinator.
  • A two-day National Seminar on Canada: A Multitude of Spaces on 01.02.2013 & 02.02.2013. 78 papers were presented. Amount spent – Rs. 114,000. Dr.D.E.Benet was the coordinator.
  • A two-day UGC sponsored National Seminar on Writing on Rights is not a Rite but Realistic – A Study on the Relationship between Literature and Human Rights September 16 & 17, 2010. 176 papers were presented. Amount received from UGC – Rs. 100,000. K.Srinivasan was the coordinator.
  • A two-day IV International Conference of Organization for Studies in Literature and Environment – India on Ecology: Texts and Contexts – September 25 & 26, 2009. 189 papers were presented. Amount spent – Rs. 2,09,000. D.E.Benet was the coordinator.
  • A two-day UGC sponsored National Seminar on Protest as a Way of Life: An Analytical Study of Literatures in English in the Modern Socio-Cultural Contexts – September 3 & 4, 2009. 135 papers were presented. Amount received from UGC – Rs. 85,000. M.AMALORPAVAkaran was the coordinator.
  • A one-day Management sponsored Workshop on Speech Sounds and Spoken English for Higher Secondary Teachers in Tiruchirapalli Educational District – 27.02.2007. 60 teachers participated. S.Pushpavanam was the coordinator.
  • A three-day UGC sponsored National Seminar on Translation as a Tool to promote National Integration and Social Awareness – September 27, 28 & 29, 2006. Nearly 85 papers were presented. Amount received from UGC – Rs. 75,000. M.AMALORPAVAkaran was the coordinator.

  • Principal Saranathan Endowment Lecture was delivered by Dr.C.T.Indra, Formerly Professor and Head of the Department of English Madras University, Chennai, on Comparative Literature: Towards Cultural Studies on 20.3.2014.
  • The Department of English organized a Seminar on New Vistas of Research in English Studies during 6th - 8th March 2014.
  • Two Day National Seminar on Canada : A Multitude of Spaces was organized by the Department of English on 01-02-2013 and 02-02-2013.
  • One Day Workshop on Communicational Dynamics for personality Development was organized by the Department of English (UAP) on 08-10-2012.
  • U.G.C. sponsored Seminar on Writing on Rights is not rite but realistic – a study on the relationship between Human Rights and Literature was organized by the Department of English from 16-09-2010 to 17-09-2010.
  • A UGC Sponsored National Seminar on Protest as a way of Life – An Analytical Study in English Literatures in the Modern Socio - Cultural contexts was conducted by the Department of English during 3rd & 4th September 2009.
  • The IV International Conference of Organization for Studies in Literature and Environment on the theme Ecology: Texts and Contexts was conducted by the Department of English during 25th & 26th September 2009.
  • The U.G.C. sponsored National Seminar on Translation as a Tool to promote National Integration and Social Awareness was conducted by the Dept. of English for 3 days from 27-09-06 to 29-09-06.
